The Porter-Cable 7-1/4-Inch 424 MAG-SAW is comfortable, powerful, and versatile. The comfortable weight is due to magnesium construction. The power comes from a 15-amp motor that delivers 5,800 rpm. Nicest of all, however, is a quick blade-change system. Just lock the blade with the push of a button and then use the fold-out lever on the blade clamp to loosen or tighten down the blade flange. Of course, a system like this requires some vigilance. You wouldn't want to power on the saw with the clamp lever extended.

Another appealing feature includes an electric brake that stops the action upon release of the trigger in about 2 seconds. The lower guard is designed to avoid hang-ups when starting cuts. A built-in clip can be used to keep the power cord away from the cutting action. Shoe tilt capacity is a full 50 degrees, and there is a positive stop at 45 degrees. A dust port in the top guard can be adjusted to aim dust exhaust away from the user and the action. It has a 1-inch outside diameter, allowing it to mate with a vacuum attachment.

The 424MAG has the blade mounted to the left for those who prefer it that way. Look for Porter-Cable's model 325MAG if you want this tool, but with the blade on the right. A carrying case and an 18-tooth carbide-tipped blade is included with the saw.

Powerful yet relatively lightweight, the Porter-Cable 424 should be a contender in the eyes of any homeowner or pro surveying the field of quality circular saws.
