iumWhether your job is big or small, the Porter-Cable 14.4-Volt Premium Cordless Hammerdrill/Driver Kit 9977 can handle it. Great for home and professional use, this compact drill is sturdy and tough, delivering up to 420 inch-pounds of torque to power through any task. The 9977 features a three-stage planetary gearing system for smooth operation and long life, and the two-speed gearbox offers ranges of 0 to 450 revolutions per minute (rpm) and 0 to 1,400 rpm.
The keyless 1/2-inch ratcheting steel chuck with carbide teeth has a first-rate bit-gripping strength, and the 22-position clutch does superbly drilling and driving into all kinds of material. The 9977 can go through a 4x5-inch post like a hot knife through butter. This unit also comes with a decent hammerdrill mode (18,200 maximum blows per minutes) for masonry work, such as drilling in concrete, brick and stone. A removable side handle screws into either side for additional control and support during high-torque drilling and driving operations.
We especially like the finger action of the 9977's variable-speed trigger switch, which makes controlling the drill speed smooth and easy. Porter-Cable's interchangeable Grip-to-Fit handle inserts let you customize the grip from small to medium to large, so the handle always has a great feel no matter who's handling the drill. However, the adjusting torque collar is a bit stiff as you near the highest speed settings, as is the two-speed gear shift. The 9977 is also a bit top-heavy, but that's to be expected with a hammerdrill option.
The 9977 comes with two 14.4-volt batteries, a 1-hour battery charger that can charge Porter-Cable 12-volt and 14.4-volt NiCad batteries, a bit and a shock-resistant storage case with metal latches. For a professional-quality drill you can count on, the Porter-Cable 14.4-Volt Premium Cordless Hammerdrill/Driver Kit 9977 is great to have in your workshop or toolbox.
