Polk Audio RM10 home theater speaker system

Date Published: 8/25/06

The Polk Audio RM10 home theater speaker system packs a rich, wholesome sound into an attractive set of compact speakers. Polk uses pewter-finished aluminum for the cabinets, and in addition to the sleek look, the construction reduces resonance and produces a tighter response than plastic cabinets can provide.

The RM10 is a 5.1 package, with four satellites, a center channel, and a powered subwoofer. Each of the four identical satellites uses a 3-1/4-inch midrange driver and a 3/4-inch silk/polymer composite dome tweeter. The center channel has two of the 3-1/4-inch midranges, which provide a solid anchor for movie dialogue. The cabinets all have a PowerPort, a Polk innovation that improves the lower midrange response. In addition, the satellites and center channel are all magnetically shielded for placement near a television.

The subwoofer features a 10-inch driver mounted in a cabinet with a slot-loaded bass vent. The subwoofer has a 120-watt (peak) amplifier, producing an accurate sound that is sufficient for small- and medium-size home theater spaces. In addition to an LFE input, the subwoofer has line- and speaker-level inputs, allowing for greater connection flexibility.

The total frequency response of the RM10 system is 30Hz to 24,000Hz, with an impedance of 8 ohms. The recommended power handling is 65 watts (average), with a peak rating of 130 watts. All of the satellites use five-way binding posts. In addition, the satellites have integrated swivel wall mounts, and the center speaker comes with a clever cradle that rotates for optimal performance whether it's placed above or below a television.

Matching satellites are available for purchase, so the RM10 can serve in a six- or even seven-channel home theater speaker system. Polk Audio's RM10 package is a wonderful step above an entry-level speaker system, combining robust performance and attractive cabinets with a smart design.

Pros:  Great sound quality, innovative design features and construction
Cons:  Somewhat expensive for a small to medium-size system

Warranty
3 years subwoofer amplifier, 5 years speakers
