The VSX-816-K is a low-end Pioneer home theater receiver. That is speaking relatively, of course, as a basic Pioneer system is still a high-quality component. Indeed, the black VSX-816-K (and its mechanical twin, the silver VSX-816-S) is packed with useful features, and it proves to be a good value for the money.

The most entertaining feature of the VSX-816-K is its compatibility with XM Satellite Radio. With the addition of an XM tuner, antenna and paid subscription (all sold separately), you can use the VSX-816-K to listen to XM's 170-plus channels, including multiple channels broadcast in XM HD Surround. This new feature uses Neural Surround technology to deliver a surround sound experience that is unlike any radio broadcast you have ever heard.

The VSX-816-K provides 110 watts to each of its seven channels, and there is built-in processing for Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24 and DTS Neo:6, among other surround formats. The system employs Pioneer's MCACC automatic calibration system to set up speaker levels and delays, and a five-band graphic equalizer lets you further fine-tune the audio to your particular preferences.

There are six discrete analog inputs for the output of a DVD-Audio or SACD player. The VSX-816-K also has a total of five digital audio inputs, including an optical input on the front panel. There are four composite video inputs and four S-video inputs. Unfortunately, the VSX-816-K lacks HDMI switching, which limits this receiver's usefulness in a high-end home theater system. Despite this shortcoming, with its XM compatibility and seven-channel sound, the VSX-816-K is a fine home theater receiver that offers a host of handy features.
