Pioneer Inno GEX-INNO1 portable satellite radio
Date Published: 8/11/06
The Pioneer Inno (model GEX-INNO1) is one of the coolest portable devices currently available. The Inno combines two fabulous technologies: satellite radio and MP3.
Unlike other portable satellite radios that can only receive satellite signals while the player is "docked" at home or in the car, the Inno receives the XM Satellite Radio signal wherever you go. It also has 1GB of memory (up to 50 hours of satellite content), so in places where you can't receive the satellite signal, the Inno can play back hours of stored XM programming. That 1GB of memory can also hold your own MP3 and WMA files, although the capacity might not be sufficient for serious digital audio buffs.
You can save any XM content to memory for later playback. Even if you do not select to save an XM song when it begins, a built-in memory buffer allows you to record the entire tune (provided you were listening from the beginning of the song). If you like a particular song on XM, the Inno lets you bookmark it. Then, if you connect the Inno to a computer with an internet portal, you can purchase the song instantly from the XM+Napster website.
The Inno is an attractive device. It has an impressive 1-7/10-inch TFT LCD full-color display, so building playlists and organizing collection of saved music is not a chore. In addition to the included earbuds, the Inno also has an integrated FM transmitter that lets you listen to the satellite signal through just about any FM radio (using a vacant FM station). Owners of other XM products will be familiar with TuneSelect, which alerts you when a favorite song or artist is playing on another channel. The Pioneer Inno is an innovative portable device that will give XM Satellite Radio fans something to cheer about.
Pros: Innovative device combines two great technologies, attractive display, integrated FM transmitter
Cons: Relatively small storage capacity for digital audio files
