Pioneer HTS-260 Home Theater Receiver and Speakers

Date Published: 5/12/08

Pioneer's HTS-260 is a home theater system that combines aesthetically pleasing components with robust playback power. In addition, this compact package includes some innovative features you might not expect from a $350 home theater system. On the other hand, it does not include a DVD player, so keep that in mind when considering the overall cost.

Most home theater systems put the signal processing, amplifier and input connections in a main unit along with a DVD player, but the HTS-260 uses a novel design that locates the processing equipment and connections in the subwoofer. While the resulting wiring configuration may cause you to rethink your subwoofer placement, it allows the control unit to be much smaller than usual.

To make set-up and calibration an effortless task, Pioneer has incorporated its Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration Control (MCACC) into the HTS-260. With the help of an included microphone, MCACC automatically adjusts the speaker levels to produce a perfectly tuned soundstage. The HTS-260 also has eight different surround modes for movies, music, games, regular TV and other content. In addition, there is integrated processing for Dolby Digital and DTS signals.

While the innovative design and automatic calibration are most welcome, the HTS-260 doesn't forget about the basics. This five-channel system produces 600 total watts of power, with 100 watts going to each of the speakers and the subwoofer. The four satellites and center-channel speaker all have identical 3-1/16-inch drivers, creating a seamless soundstage that is robust despite a pronounced lack of high-frequency clarity. The 6-5/16-inch driver in the subwoofer produces a musical low-end punch, but don't expect it to shake the pictures off the walls.

As previously mentioned, the HTS-260 does not have an integrated DVD player, so if you don't have a player or are looking to upgrade, you should keep the extra expense in mind. With its compact design and easy set-up and calibration, the Pioneer HTS-260 is a smart system for small to medium-size home theaters.

Pros:  Compact control unit, automatic speaker calibration
Cons:  Two-way speakers would correct high-frequency deficiencies
