Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-1150HD 50-Inch Plasma HDTV
Date Published: 7/16/08
"Kuro" means black in Japanese, and the Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-1150HD is aptly named. This 50-inch set delivers some of the richest blacks you're likely to see in a plasma HDTV. While the PRO-1150HD has a native resolution of only 1,365x768, its picture easily rivals 1,080p models. This is proof that a good video processor goes a lot further than just extra pixels.
The PRO-1150HD offers unmatched contrast along with vibrant, lifelike colors and a truly crystal-clear picture, but don't expect a bargain-basement price just because this is a 768p set. Pioneer plasma sets have always been top-shelf models, and you won't find the PRO-1150HD at a deep discount. So if you want a top-of-the-line picture, you're going to have to pay for it. Even with its relatively large 50-inch screen, the resolution is good enough that you won't see any jaggies or annoying digital artifacts.
This model features a smooth film-motion mode that makes viewing a cinematic delight, and numerous noise-reduction filters present a picture that is truly unsurpassed. The PRO-1150HD is also compatible with next-generation x.v.Color. While there isn't much in the way of support for x.v.Color at this current date, we'd expect no less for the PRO-1150HD's asking price. In addition, this will be a nice feature to have in the near future, especially as Sony is rolling out a Blu-ray Disc player with x.v.Color. As soon as someone starts producing x.v.Color movies, the PRO-1150HD will be all ready for show time.
The PRO-1150HD has an impressive array of connectivity options. These include four HDMI 1.3 inputs, including two with analog audio inputs just in case you should ever need. Pioneer doesn't skimp on the component inputs either, including three component video inputs along with two composite and a single S-video input.
The PRO-1150HD is all about convergence. This set features a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet port and is Home Media Gallery-compatible. Thus you can stream HD movies, photos, videos and music content from your computer to the big screen. With HD movie downloads becoming more and more accessible, the PRO-1150HD has you covered for tomorrow and beyond.
It might seem odd to stream music to a television, but the PRO-1150HD packs 17-watt, side-mounted stereo speakers with digital amplifiers that do an excellent job with most audio sources. While the sound system lacks the intensity of a home theater system, the SRS WOW, FOCUS and TruBass Surround Sound modes certainly impress.
The PRO-1150HD doesn't have an exceptionally sleek exterior design, but this is a minor complaint at best. The bezel is true to the KURO name, with a flat-black finish that blends in well in a dark room. However, the side-mounted speakers ruin the otherwise Ninja-like appearance. Fortunately, the speakers are removable, but it is a shame to lose the nice audio functionality that this set has to offer.
Pioneer has proven that a great plasma HDTV doesn't need to offer the highest resolution to deliver the best picture. And in the case of the future-proof Elite KURO PRO-1150HD, this is a very fine picture indeed.
Pros: Impressive audio system almost makes a separate speaker system unnecessary, deep black levels, advanced x.v.Color compatibility extends the life of the set, Ethernet connectivity
Cons: Expensive (but worth it), aesthetics could be better, not true 1,080p display
Warranty
2 years, parts and labor
