Phoenix Denise Austin's Dual Action Mini Stepper

Date Published: 11/8/07

The Phoenix Dual Action Mini Stepper is endorsed by fitness authority Denise Austin and is a compact, inexpensive alternative to a standard stair stepper. If you lack space at home or are looking for low-cost way to exercise when it's raining outside or when you don't have time to make it to the gym, this model offers a solution. That said, though, you shouldn't expect any frills or much variety in your workouts from a machine as basic and compact as this.

Dual hydraulic cylinders provide resistance on this stair stepper, and we find that the device delivers a surprisingly effective workout for the legs and buns. The detachable handles add some resistance for a simultaneous upper body workout, although only beginners are likely to find this challenging. The steps offer a secure tread and the stepping motion is smooth.

This model's small electronic monitor requires two AA-sized batteries and displays features such as elapsed time and number of steps taken, although the Mini Stepper lacks any kind of heart rate monitor. The unit stands at just 9 inches in height without the resistance arms attached, so it's small enough to slide under a bed when not in use. And with a footprint of just 18.5X19 inches, it is compact enough to fit in the trunk of a car. Despite its compact size, though, the stepper is strong enough to support users who weigh up to 250 pounds.

While a mini stepper like this does not offer enough variation to sustain a regular, long-term workout regime, it offers a hassle-free means of obtaining a cardio workout at home without taking up a lot of space or putting a huge dent in your wallet. We recommend this product as an inexpensive alternative to a full-size stair stepper; it's ideal for novice users who are just starting an exercise program or more experienced exercisers looking for a means with which to occasionally work out at home.

Pros: Compact, resistance handles make for a total body workout
Cons: No heart rate monitoring, little workout variation
