Philips PET710 portable DVD player

Date Published: 1/9/08

The Philips PET710 portable DVD player delivers impressive audio and non-progressive scan video performance that outshines many similarly priced models. The PET710 is also sturdily built, so don't expect the affordable price to mean a flimsy design. However, there are several disappointing aspects that prevent it from receiving a higher rating.

The PET710's 7-inch TFT LCD screen displays a sharp image with accurate colors and good contrast. The 16:9 aspect ratio screen allows you to view DVD movies in their original widescreen format. More impressive are the twin stereo speakers, which provide clean audio whether it's a movie soundtrack or a music CD. For private listening, the PET710 sports dual headphone jacks to keep two kids entertained in the back of a car or sitting next to each other on a plane. The player is a breeze to operate, so even young kids will be able to keep themselves amused with the PET710.

The rechargeable NiMH battery lasts up to an acceptable 2.5 hours, depending on the level of brightness and volume. Connecting the battery to the PET710 does add some bulk to the slim design, although if you are using the player on a road trip, you can make use of the vehicle power outlet adapter. This portable DVD player can also double as a home player, as it has a coaxial digital audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS passthrough. It even comes with a basic remote control.

Unfortunately, the PET710 has no audio/video inputs (only an output), so you won't be able to attach a camcorder or game console. It operates noisily when first loading a disc. While it has a selection of useful playback options such as parental controls, shuffle play, and picture zoom, it lacks a resume play function, so if you stop a DVD partway through and turn off the unit, you'll have to search for the place where you left off. For people more interested in the video and audio performance as opposed to the bells and whistles, the PET710 portable DVD player makes a good choice.
