Philips HTS3555/37

Date Published: 3/26/08

The Philips HTS3555/37 is a low-cost and low-profile home theater system. The main unit has a built-in upscaling DVD player along with the amplifier hardware. Five main speakers and an eight-inch subwoofer are included, along with an iPod dock, remote control, and various wires for hooking up the system.

The setup is pretty straightforward, and the manual has clear directions for the input and output connections. For a budget unit, we like that Philips has included an HDMI port for new HD and flat panel TVs. The player can be set to scale your DVDs up to 1080i for cleaner images on these newer sets. Not only does it play normal DVDs, but it can play DivX, and DivX ultra files from a burned CD or DVD disc or from the front USB port via a thumb drive.

Of course, audio flexibility is one main focus of this home theater system. There is a stereo audio input for standard devices, as well as a digital coax jack so you can decode full Dolby Digital or DTS from your cable or satellite dish box. Unfortunately, there isn't an optical input jack on the back--most newer HDTVs have optical outputs for Dolby Digital sound that comes from over the air broadcasts, and the Philips doesn't have you covered in this area. MP3 and WMA files can also be played from a burned CD disc or via the front USB port. And let's not forget about the included iPod dock, which can also work for Philips own GoGear music devices.

The main speakers are fairly small, but the subwoofer module is a nice touch, as most home theaters in this price range only have 6-1/2-inch woofers. A little more punch in the bass area helps with movie sound effects. We recommend placing the sub module in the front of your room, as you will have a better experience with dialog from the center speaker as well as a more full sound from the front speakers. Please note that all of the speakers are non-standard in their ratings; As such, it will be difficult to find replacements and/or upgrade as the receiver isn't designed for standard 8 Ohm speakers or a separate powered subwoofer.

The remote control layout is pretty nice, the system is quick to set up, and there is an adequate about of bass for a budget system. The Philips HTS3555/37 is a solid performer with a few good features that make sense for a new home theater user who is looking for deals.

Pros: iPod dock included, eight-inch subwoofer, nice remote layout
Cons: No digital optical port, not really upgradeable
