Pharos Traveler GPS 525 PDA

Date Published: 6/3/08

The PDA-GPS convergence continues with the Pharos Traveler GPS 525. Pharos is another global-positioning system hardware and software manufacturer that has gotten into the PDA market, and it has managed to put together an impressive little handheld.

We say little, because the GPS 525 weighs less than 4.5 ounces, measures less than 4-1/2X2-1/2 inches and is just over 1/2-inch thick. Since it does not have a foldout antenna, you get to keep it at this compact size while in use.

Unfortunately, this tiny frame doesn't leave much room for a display, so the 2-4/5-inch screen is smaller than what you get with most other PDAs. Thankfully, Pharos packs a 320X240 resolution into that screen, so images and text are crisp and bright.

Even with the antenna on the inside of the chassis, the GPS 525 manages to obtain a GPS signal quickly, and it holds it reliably. Pharos includes a handy bundle of accessories with the GPS 525, such as a windshield mount and auto charger for navigating in your car, as well as a 512MB SD card with preloaded maps of 50 U.S. metropolitan areas.

In addition to GPS, this PDA features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well. The former lets you hop onto the internet at any wireless hotspot that supports 802.11b, and the latter lets you connect wireless peripherals such as keyboards and headsets. You can also synch up data with your Bluetooth-capable PC or cell phone.

The internal power of the GPS 525 is suitable for mobile tasks. There's a 300MHz processor, 64MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM. Battery life is impressive, lasting up to 8 hours before needing a recharge. This is a key feature for a GPS-capable PDA that you'll be taking on the road, although keep in mind that the life varies significantly depending on the functions being used.

The list price is hefty at $550, but we were able to find it at some vendors for closer to $400, making it a decently priced PDA for all the features included. If you're looking for a PDA with the triple threat of GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the Pharos Traveler GPS 525 is a compact and well-designed option.

Pros: Effective GPS, Wi-Fi, built-in Bluetooth
