PDA Accessories Buying Guide

The Basics: PDA Accessories

PDA accessories make your PDA a much better device for usually a pretty reasonable cost. PDAs, or Personal Digital Assistants, are like minicomputers, with their own processors, memory, operating systems and applications. However, these handheld computers are designed for portability, so they don't usually come with all the capabilities you might need. That's where PDA accessories come in. You can incorporate additional functionality into your PDA through an expansion slot or simply provide a protective case to keep your handheld computer safe during your travels.

PDA accessories that add additional functionality often fit into the existing memory card slot. For example, SDIO (Secure Digital Input/Output) devices fit into an SD slot just like PC card devices fit into a PCMCIA slot on a portable computer.

Some PDAs don't ship with any kind of wireless connectivity, and a PDA accessory can add this ability at a later date. With a Wi-Fi card, you can use your PDA at a wireless hotspot to browse the web and check your e-mail. Adding Bluetooth capabilities is another way to enhance your handheld. This lets you synchronize your PDA with a Bluetooth computer, sending data back and forth between PDA and PC without having to connect a cable. Bluetooth also lets you connect to additional accessories, such as hands-free headsets for PDAs that have cell phone capabilities.

Another handy SDIO accessory is a voice recorder. Many PDAs have this capability built in, but if yours lacks it, this is a quick way to turn your PDA into a capable voice recorder. You might need more memory if you're doing a lot of recording, but audio won't fill up your PDA's internal memory as fast as video.

PDA accessories also include docking stations and mounting options. A docking station allows you to easily synch your PDA with your computer by simply placing the PDA in the station. It can also provide additional ports and other options such as speakers, letting you listen to songs on your PDA in stereo sound. Accessories that let you mount your handheld on the windshield or in a cup holder keep your PDA within easy reach in your vehicle. Car mounts are especially useful if you have GPS capabilities on your PDA.

One of the most common PDA accessories is a case. Although some handhelds will ship with a case, it's often a flimsy, unattractive shell that offers little protection. You can opt for a variety of different PDA cases, including leather cases for aesthetics, metal cases for extreme protection, and clear models that allow you to use your PDA while it's inside the case. You can even find watertight cases that will keep your PDA safe in the rain.

Screen protectors are an inexpensive but often overlooked accessory. These are very useful for preventing scratches on your PDA's screen, and they can effectively reduce glare when you're using your PDA in brightly lit conditions.

Many PDA accessory vendors offer battery recharge kits, such as car adapters for recharging on the road or travel charge kits. These kits offer different plugs and adapters that allow you to recharge your handheld in other parts of the world. International travelers depend on such accessories.

You can also add a variety of advanced functionality to your PDA. For example, you can add a GPS receiver that uses global positioning system satellites to determine your location within a few meters. A GPS receiver is especially helpful as a directional aid when you're traveling in an unknown area.

A digital camera add-on lets you take pictures and save them directly to your PDA's memory. Some camera accessories also allow you to capture short video clips. The resolution won't be as high as with a dedicated camera or camcorder, but it can be a handy way to capture images on the go.

You can even add a TV tuner to your handheld. These add-ons let you input a broadcast or cable signal to your PDA and watch television on the small screen. Upcoming PDA accessories you might soon see include fingerprint readers for added security, scanners, and printers.

The most common accessories are ones that simply make your PDA easier to use. A good example is an attachable keyboard. Entering data into a PDA can be a slow and tedious task, but having a larger keyboard makes it nearly as fast as a laptop computer. Some keyboards plug directly into your PDA, while others can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth or infrared. If you input a lot of data into your PDA, this can be an important accessory.

Extra cables and connectors are also available for your PDA. For example, some cables let you connect your PDA to your PC's USB port and synch and recharge at the same time. Spare cables aren't the most glamorous of PDA accessories, but they can be very handy when you need them.

How to Shop

Accessories are available from your PDA manufacturer as well as third-party vendors. The most important thing to keep in mind is to ensure that the accessory you're purchasing matches your PDA model. Look for the fine print. Even if an accessory says that it fits all iPAQs, there might be an asterisk that leaves out your particular model.

This is particularly important with PDA cases. When you purchase a case, you need to ensure that you get the right case for your model of PDA. Some cases are designed for an entire line of PDAs while others are only for specific models. If it's not designed for your PDA, it usually won't fit.

Another useful hint when shopping for more than one PDA accessory is to look at the packages and kits that vendors offer. If you need a case and international adapters, you might find a travel kit that has everything you need for a lower overall price. If you're taking your PDA on the road, an auto package might offer a car charger and a windshield mount together. This is an easy way to save a few dollars.

While there is a lot more variety in the PDA accessory market online, you can find many of these accessories at your local brick-and-mortar store. This is also a good way to check an accessory out before buying. If shopping online, it is a good idea to shop around to make sure you're getting the best price.

As always, make sure that your PDA can handle the accessory that you're shopping for. If it's a Bluetooth accessory, you'll need to already have Bluetooth on your PDA to take advantage of it. Picking up the right PDA accessory can help you extend the power of your handheld device or simply keep it safer on the go.
