Patriot PSSB straight-shaft string trimmer

When it comes to gas-powered string trimmers, the engine is everything. And the Patriot PSSB straight-shaft string trimmer is driven by a four-cycle powerhouse.
Sure, the new hybrid engines that combine the benefits of two- and four-cycle technology are all the rage, but they're more expensive than straight two- or four-cycle engines. Models that use these hybrids are routinely $50, $100, even $200 more than their more traditional counterparts. If budget is a fairly big consideration, the Patriot PSSB straight-shaft string trimmer is definitely worth considering, especially if you prefer what a four-stroke engine has to offer.
With four-cycle engines, there's no need to mix gas and oil, the operating life is usually much longer than its two-cycle competitors', and the emission level is considerably less. The Patriot PSSB's Briggs & Stratton "Fource" engine delivers all of those standard advantages, and throws in considerable power, to boot. The nicely hefty 34cc engine delivers enough torque to zip through tough weeds and tall grass at high speeds, and cuts down on the noise and vibration at lower speeds.
The 62.5-inch straight shaft is long enough to let you reach under decks or shrubs, but if you need a professional-level trimmer that stands up to the toughest lawn-care tasks, you'll probably be better served investing in a heavier-duty tool. For occasional backyard maintenance, though, this unit works well. The Patriot PSSB trimmer has a generous 18-inch cutting width, which lets you cut a wider swath than many other trimmers on the market. It comes with a shoulder strap -- in addition to the loop handle -- to take some of the pressure off your arms. That's a helpful feature, because at 13.2 pounds, this unit is a little heavier than some competitors. And the 10-ounce fuel tank is pretty teeny, so you'll be stopping to refuel fairly often.
The Patriot PSSB straight-shaft trimmer is covered by a 2-year residential warranty but only a 90-day commercial warranty.
Pros: Powerful four-cycle engine, wide cutting width, price
Cons: Small fuel tank, not as durable as some of the more expensive professional models
