Panasonic VDR-M53 DVD camcorder

Date Published: 7/15/08

The VDR-M53 is the entry-level model in Panasonic's line of DVD camcorders and one of the most affordable DVD camcorders currently available.

It offers a stripped-down feature list but still delivers solid image quality in both video and stills. The VDR-M53 records digital video and stills directly onto 3-inch discs in either DVD-RAM or DVD-R formats. DVD-RAM offers the highest quality in digital imaging and a huge storage capacity, and it is rewriteable up to 100,000 times with virtually no degradation of picture quality.

The write-once DVD-R format, on the other hand, provides a substantial savings over the more expensive DVD-RAM. DVD-R is compatible with most home DVD players and PC, so they are ideal for sharing with friends and family.

The VDR-M53 sports a 1/6-inch, 680,000-pixel CCD imager with a 24X optical/800X digital zoom function. There is little in the way of manual control, but nevertheless, overall image quality is impressive. In normal light conditions, the VDR-M53 produces clean video images with rich colors.

The performance is less impressive in low light, although the VDR-M53 is aimed at point-and-shoot enthusiasts who want a (relatively) low-cost, reliable way to preserve memories of holidays in the sun and family events. The electronic image stabilizer does a solid job at removing unwanted camera shakes during handheld recording.

As a digital stills camera, the VDR-M53 records shots to either disc or SD memory card. Stills are captured at a resolution of 640X480, although the quality is noticeably better than most similarly priced MiniDV camcorders. This model lacks a USB port, a widescreen mode, and a hot accessory shoe found on more expensive models, but that's part of the tradeoff for a lower MSRP.

For the point-and-shoot enthusiast seeking to capture good-quality video and stills in normal lighting situations, along with the convenience of the DVD format, the Panasonic VDR-M53 is certainly a good value for the money.
