Panasonic TH-65XVS30U 65-inch plasma HDTV

Date Published: 10/26/07

The Panasonic TH-65XVS30U is a huge 65-inch plasma ONYX HDTV that can link with a home computer and display digital photos, all while providing top-of-the-line video performance. The wide-format black-framed screen can be mounted on the wall using a separately available bracket. All associated components connect to a separate receiver box (the TU-PT700U digital media receiver), so wires and cables don't mar the appearance of the monitor. A separately available pedestal stand can be added if this plasma is destined for a tabletop or counter. The receiver box has NTSC and ATSC/QAM tuners and a CableCARD slot built in, eliminating the need for additional cable or HD receivers.

Resolution on the flat panel is 1,366X768, with a superior 3,000:1 contrast ratio. Images appear to leap off the screen, with very crisp edges, high levels of detail, and realistic colors. HDTV content is displayed at 480p or 1,080i, while computer content is displayed at 720p. Over one billion colors can be displayed on the TH-65XVS30U, ensuring perfectly lifelike images. Speakers are not included with this TV, but an internal amplifier produces 20 watts of audio output.

SD and PC card slots make it possible to view JPEG photos on the big screen in individual or slideshow format. Other convenience features include dual-tuner split-screen display, sleep and on/off timers, channel and video input labeling, and memory for each video input's picture settings. The beauty of a high-end TV like the TH-65XVS30U is most apparent when it serves as the center of a home theater system, so the connection options are crucial. This set will satisfy virtually all connectivity needs, as the receiver box has front audio/video and S-video inputs, as well as a computer (RGB-VGA mini D-Sub 15-pin) input. The receiver box's rear inputs include two audio/video connections, two S-video inputs, two component video inputs, and an HDMI interface. The universal remote control has illuminated buttons for nighttime convenience and a disc controller that makes for easy movement through on-screen menus.

The MSRP includes the monitor and digital media receiver (TU-PT700U).
