Panasonic TH-50PX50U 50-inch plasma HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
The TH-50PX50U is a 50-inch widescreen plasma HDTV monitor that offers stunning looks and performance. An included silver tabletop stand can be removed for mounting the monitor on a wall (an additional bracket is required). The monitor includes stereo speakers built into the silver panel below the black-framed screen. Control buttons are located below the screen as well, where they are easy to reach whether the monitor is positioned on a table or wall.
Pictures are displayed in the TH-50PX50U's native resolution of 1,366X768, with high-definition content presented in 480p, 720p, or 1,080i (adapted). The contrast ratio is 3,000:1, and the screen produces deep blacks and bright whites, rich colors, and high levels of detail. The built-in ATSC and NTSC tuners can present high-definition and standard content without the need for an additional set-top box, and cable users can eliminate their cable box by installing a CableCARD or engaging the integrated QAM tuner. A choice of four widescreen modes is available for viewing standard or wide-format content.
The stereo speakers are rated at 16 watts of total audio output, which can be configured to create a surround sound effect. V-chip controls offer a way for parents to limit or prevent young ones' access to inappropriate content. Other convenience features include closed captions, on/off and sleep timers, and video input labeling.
The TH-50PX50U has a diverse array of input and output options on the rear panel, including two composite video inputs, two S-video inputs, two component video inputs, an HDMI input with analog audio, and an audio output. Unfortunately, unlike some other models in this price range, the TH-50PX50U lacks a PC input. The remote control is comfortable to handle and is capable of operating a VCR, DVD player, cable box, and home theater receiver.
