Panasonic SC-PT750

Date Published: 4/30/08

The Panasonic SC-PT750 is a small and sleek home theater system with wireless surrounds that works great for smaller rooms. The main unit is not only the amplifier, but also a 5-disc DVD and CD changer. Included with the SC-PT750 are five main speakers, a subwoofer unit, the wireless receiver for the rear speakers, remote control, iPod dock, and cables for connecting various components. The rear of the unit has connections for a detachable power cable, speakers, HDMI video, component video, composite video, stereo audio input, iPod dock, and AM/FM/XM antennas.

The setup of the system is fairly straightforward and includes color coded cable connections and AM/FM antennas. The XM antenna is not included, but the system includes an integrated iPod dock, as well as a wireless receiver for the rear speakers. Take note that the rear speakers require a connection to the wireless receiver and therefore do not completely stand on their own. The wireless receiver is powered by AC and does not have the option to run on batteries, so be aware of this as you plan for your room setup. Additionally, the wireless receiver runs at 2.4 GHz, which may cause interference with other wireless devices in your home. This is the same frequency utilized by many cordless phones and wireless-G computer network devices. It is recommended that you keep the transmitter and receiver two to three meters away from other wireless devices. The manual is also very comprehensive in describing the menu system as well as the connections and features of the SC-PT750.

The main speakers are small and include mounting holes for both speaker stands and wall mounts. The subwoofer module is also fairly small, but will produce enough bass for smaller rooms. The system will sound best in rooms which we describe as ranging from around 10x12 feet up to 12x14 feet. In a larger room, the bass won't feel as strong and the speakers can become harsh at the loud volumes required to fill the space. If you check the manual carefully, you can see that the speakers run at 3- or 6-ohms. Most home theater speakers are 8-ohms, and may not be compatible with this system, making the SC-PT750 very limited in its upgrade potential.

We liked the inclusion of the flexible iPod dock, as well as the HDMI output for high quality video. Not only can the unit play many original and burned DVDs and formats, but it can upconvert those video signal to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. This is a desirable feature for those of you who own one of the newer flat panel or plasma HDTVs. For those with older displays there are component and composite connections as well.

As a standalone system for a small room, this theater system is an excellent low cost choice. With many audio and video options, HDMI output, XM and iPod support, and a 5-disc changer, this system, like its little brother the SC-PT650, seems to be feature-rich. The inclusion of the wireless transmitter/receiver as well as the unit's sleek black exterior make the Panasonic SC-PT750 a compelling choice.

Pros: Wireless receiver and iPod dock included, low cost, sleek all in one unit
Cons: Clutered remote control, non standard speakers not easy to upgrade
