Panasonic SC-PT650 Home Theater System
Date Published: 4/30/08The Panasonic SC-PT650 is an entry-level home theater system designed for flexibility. The main unit is a slim, five-disc DVD changer with built in amplifier. The system includes five small speakers, a subwoofer module, flexible iPod dock, remote control, and various cables for connecting everything together. In addition, there is a port on the rear of the main unit that allows you to use an optional wireless module (Panasonic SH-FX65 or SH-FX85) for operation of the rear speakers or multi-room audio. This inexpensive theater system not only includes CD and DVD playback, but also plays computer audio files and images, as well as AM/FM stations and XM radio with and external antenna.
One feature on the PT650 we appreciated is the inclusion of an HDMI output for video playback. This allows an easy connection to newer flat panel and HDTVs with near-HD quality video in 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. However, this unit is a standard DVD player and should not be confused with the new HD DVD and Blu-Ray players. There are also component video jacks for 480p output if your display device isn't HDMI-capable, and of course, there is also a standard composite video port for hooking up older TVs that only have the yellow input connection.
The included iPod dock is very flexible and allows for many kinds of iPods to be connected. There are standard antenna ports for AM and FM radio, as well as an XM radio antenna input. One stereo input jack is also available for external devices like a VCR, other MP3 player, or TV sound. However, there isn't a digital optical input for newer digital TVs that can output surround sound. This would have made for a convenient inclusion, as nearly all newer TVs sold include this as a standard output connection.
The speakers are very small and unobtrusive. They have mounting holes on the back, so they can be easily hung on a wall or placed on stands (not included with this package.) We did notice that these speakers run at a non-standard impedance, and are not easily replaceable if you wish to upgrade them in the future. The main speakers run at 3 ohms, while most separate home theater speakers run at 8 ohms. The User Manual even warns that replacing the speakers may cause the unit to fail, and we'd have to agree. These speakers will sound best in a smaller room, 12 feet square or perhaps 10x14, and can distort when used at the higher volumes needed for larger rooms. The subwoofer module is also small, but provides some good bottom edge to the sound regardless; just not the chest-thumping bass some larger units provide.
We liked the layout of the remote control, and it seemed well-balanced in our hand. The multiple file playback options were a nice perk as well (WMA, MP3, JPG). The speaker setup was quick and easy with the supplied speaker wires, and the manual was detailed with menu options and port setups. Please note that an HDMI cable is not included. Overall, the Panasonic SC-PT650 is a good starter system for people with smaller rooms and provides a wealth of options.
Pros: Nice remote control layout, plays many computer files as well as CDs and DVDs, low cost
Cons: Non-standard speakers that can't be easily upgraded, small subwoofer
