Panasonic SC-HT830V DVD/VCR home theater system
Date Published: 1/8/08
The Panasonic SC-HT830V is a complete home theater system that includes everything needed to enjoy surround sound movies and music, except the display. The system contains satellite speakers, a subwoofer, and an all-in-one control unit that contains a DVD changer, VCR, and receiver, and it packages them together at a very affordable price.
The five-disc changer supports just about all of today's common disc formats, including DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-RAM/R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD, and CD-R/RW, as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG files. It cannot play SACD. The integrated VCR has a four-head hi-fi stereo transport with MTS stereo and SAP. It offers long-play recording and high-speed rewind. The receiver contains an AM/FM tuner, seven soundfield presets, analog audio inputs (but no digital audio inputs), and internal Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II processing for surround sound. The main unit provides progressive scan component video output for digital displays, as well as S-video and composite video outputs for analog televisions. The receiver also has a rear-channel output that can connect to an optional transmitter to wirelessly transmit audio data to an optional receiver/amplifier to drive rear-channel speakers.
The amplifier has a total power rating of 470 watts, with 45 watts going to each of the two front satellites, 140 watts to the center channel, 45 watts to each of the two rear satellites, and 150 watts to the subwoofer. The front speakers are mounted on adjustable-height stands, while the other speakers are principally designed for shelf mounting, although the rear satellites can be wall mounted. The front speakers use a two-way design with a pair of drivers, while the center-channel speaker is a two-way design with three drivers. The rear satellites are full-range but have only one driver. The speakers are all magnetically shielded.
The SC-HT830V will provide a quality audio and video experience, but it is not a powerful system. The drivers in its speaker complement are not matched, so in some playback situations this may result in slight imbalances in the surround soundfield.
Nevertheless, given its price point and excellent collection of playback features, the Panasonic SC-HT830V is a fine purchase, particularly for those looking to combine DVD and VHS playback into one standalone home theater unit.
