Panasonic PV-GS85

Date Published: 12/10/07

The Panasonic PV-GS85 MiniDV camcorder is a step up from the entry level PV-GS80, and while it delivers quality video, it offers few extra features over the cheaper unit. The two camcorders offer identical optical setups: The PV-GS85 features a single 1/6 inch 680K pixel sensor that delivers 340K effective pixels in 4:3 mode and 460K in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Similarly, the lens is a Panasonic rather than one manufactured by Leica Dicomar. For that, you'll need to upgrade to the higher end PV-GS320 model.

The most appealing aspects of the PV-GS85 are its 32x optical zoom capability along with Panasonic's excellent optical image stabilization system, which does a great job at eliminating camera shakes during handheld shooting. As with the PV-GS80, this DV camcorder produces excellent video when used in well-lit situations. Images are clean and sharp with good color saturation and plenty of shadow detail. Unfortunately, in anything less than ideal conditions the video performance is far less pleasing, and the night shooting mode proves ineffective. As part of its slightly improved feature set, the PV-GS85 does feature a built-in video light which helps boost the low light performance (at least when your subject is close to the lens).

Another upgrade over the entry level unit, the PV-GS85 offers a SD memory card slot for recording and storing digital stills. However, the overall still photo capability of this DV camcorder is still extremely limited. You can use a SD or SDHC memory card to record stills at a maximum resolution of just 640x480 pixels--useful for little more than attaching to emails. The PV-GS85 can also double as a webcam when connected to a PC via the USB port, but unfortunately, that is merely a USB 1.1 connection. The camcorder also offers a FireWire port but like the USB and AC power ports, it is located behind the battery. This quirky design means that you'll have to remove the battery and plug in the AC adapter before you can connect the camcorder to a PC.

More positively, the one touch navigation system is simple to operate, although most point and shooters will likely be happy to keep the PV-GS85 in auto mode. The 2.7 inch LCD monitor is bright and clear. Battery life is less impressive so we'd recommend carrying a backup if you plan to be shooting for much more than an hour.

While the Panasonic PV-GS85 MiniDV camcorder offers more features than the entry level PV-GS80, such as a video light and memory card slot, these have only limited effectiveness.

Pros: Good video performance in well-lit situations, built-in video light, 32x optical zoom and excellent optical image stabilization system
Cons: Very limited stills function, poor low light performance
