Panasonic PV-GS180 Three-CCD MiniDV Camcorder
Date Published: 2/25/08
As the entry-level model in Panasonic's line of three-CCD MiniDV camcorders, the PV-GS180 lacks some of the advanced features found on more expensive models. Despite this, the PV-GS180 still captures extremely detailed video images.
The PV-GS180 offers no built-in flash, hot accessory shoe or remote control, all of which can be found on the next model up the ladder, the PV-GS300. In addition, the PV-GS180's image stabilization system is digital rather than optical, and no image stabilization is available when shooting in 16:9 widescreen mode. The PV-GS180 also lacks the higher model's wide-format LCD display, instead offering a standard-format 2-1/2-inch display.
It may sound as though we're preparing to deliver a negative review, but nothing could be further from the truth. The PV-GS180's three 1/6-inch CCD image sensors each deliver 440,000 effective pixels in standard mode and 380,000 pixels in widescreen mode. The lens lacks the Leica name, but it still offers a 10X optical/700X digital zoom as well as a macro function for shooting extreme close-ups at short range. The PV-GS180's video images are comparable to those of the more expensive Panasonic three-CCD models, displaying excellent clarity, sharp edges and well-balanced colors.
Once you become familiar with the one-touch navigation system, operating the PV-GS180 becomes point-and-shoot simple. However, this digital camcorder really excels when it comes to manual control. The PV-GS180 has manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, gain and focus, all accessed via the easy-to-use joystick control. Budding videographers will appreciate the headphone jack, something the higher-end models lack. The PV-GS180 also performs well as a digital stills camera, snapping 2.3-megapixel stills to tape or SD card, even while continuing to shoot video.
While the absence of some features from the higher-end models is regrettable, the PV-GS180 remains a well-equipped and eminently affordable three-CCD MiniDV camcorder capable of delivering outstanding video.
Pros: Three-CCD design, excellent manual controls, offers a headphone jack that the higher-end PV-GS300 lacks
Cons: No built-in flash, no hot accessory shoe, lacks important features found on more expensive Panasonic three-CCD MiniDV camcorders
