Panasonic PV-GS150 three-CCD MiniDV camcorder
Date Published: 2/19/08
The PV-GS150 is the middle child in Panasonic's current three-CCD MiniDV line, and it is one of the smallest three-CCD camcorders available.
Nestled between the PV-GS65 and PV-GS250 in terms of both price and features, the PV-GS150 is compact and extremely portable, and it produces high-quality video and stills. Each CCD sensor measures 1/6 inch, and in normal lighting conditions, the colors produced are rich and crisp. The low-light performance is similarly solid, although there is of course an increase in video noise and loss of color vibrancy.
The PV-GS150 boasts a Leica Dicomar lens with a 10X optical/700X digital zoom, as well as a digital image stabilization system and macro zoom feature for shooting extreme close-ups from short distances.
While point-and-shoot enthusiasts will appreciate the auto exposure presets on the PV-GS150, as well as the auto mode that returns many of the controls to their default settings, this camcorder is aimed more at the experienced home video maker seeking greater manual control.
The unit allows manual control of exposure, shutter speed, white balance, and even gain, which is unusual for a camcorder in this price range. There is also a manual focus control, although the PV-GS150 lacks the superior focus ring of the PV-GS250. Most of the manual controls are accessed via the navigational system and the easy-to-use joystick control conveniently located at the rear of the camera.
The PV-GS150's performance as a digital stills camera is of a similar high quality. It captures stills to SD card or tape at a maximum resolution of 1,760X1,320, and it has a built-in flash. The PV-GS150 also features a handy integrated lens cover and a hot accessory shoe.
The Panasonic PV-GS150 is a quality camcorder that produces excellent video and stills at a reasonable price.
