Panasonic PT-61LCX70 Rear Projection

When purchasing an HDTV, there is a balance to be struck between price, size and features. With the new rear projection LCD sets with the LIFI light source, there's a lot of food for thought. The Panasonic PT-61LCX70 features the same innovative LIFI (LIght FIdelity) light sources as the LCZ70 series, but features a 720p rather than 1080p resolution. It is worth noting that, price-wise, the PT-61LCX70 is very comparable to the PT-56LCZ70, a true 1080p set but about five inches smaller in diagonal screen size. Whether you'd prefer the set up in size or would focus on resolution are the factors that must be considered.
This isn't to say that PT-61LCX70 is a bad set. In fact it does have many of the same features, including that aforementioned light source, which may last so long that it might never need to be changed. This lamp has no electrodes, and as a result, you shouldn't have to worry about a diminished picture over time as there are no traditional electrodes to wear out. Instead, the picture with the PT-61LCX70 should be as bright after 20,000 hours as the day you first turned on the set.
As with other sets using LIFI in the Panasonic line, this model has the benefit of being able to heat up quickly when the power is turned on. Thus, you'll be watching TV practically before you can even lower the remote control or flip channels. The LIFI light source also provides colors that can be described as a very much true-to-life. And while many manufacturers throw around claims, and even boast about lifelike colors, the entire LCX line actually delivers. The reds are certainly very rich, but the skin tones have a very natural quality to them as well. There is variety of aspect control settings, including those for 4:3, zoom, full, H-fill and even modes specifically designed for use with a PC.
The Panasonic PT-61LCX70 doesn't skimp on connections either, and we were impressed with the multitude of offerings. It features three HDMI inputs (one front, two rear), along with an SD memory card slot (for viewing digital photo), PC input and S-Video and composite inputs. There are dual rear component video with RCA audio inputs and an optical audio output. The casing has smooth lines and a rather reasonable footprint for a 61-widescreen set. Sitting below the screen are the set's pair of speakers, which have 20 watts of total power. These deliver reasonable audio performance, including a simulated surround sound mode but obviously to take advantage of the superior picture you'll want a true surround sound system.
While priced nearly the same as the slightly smaller PT-56LCZ70, this 720p resolution set is still a good deal for a 61-inch model, especially considering that it features the new LIFI technology. It is just a matter of deciding whether the slightly larger size is worth the lower resolution.
Pros: Long lasting light source, three HDMI inputs, sleek design
Cons: Needs dedicated surround sound system to get the full experience, 720p
Warranty
1-year limited; 5 years, light source
