Panasonic PT-52LCX66 52-Inch LCD Projection HDTV
Date Published: 4/28/08
Panasonic includes PC connectivity, an SD memory card slot and an internal high-definition tuner in its appealing 52-inch PT-52LCX66. While they receive less attention than their DLP counterparts, LCD projection HDTVs like the PT-52LCX66 offer comparable performance in relatively compact cabinets. They also tend to be slightly more affordable than DLP sets of the same size, so big-screen shoppers on a budget would be wise to consider an LCD projection set.
Like DLP, LCD projection does not need the convergence adjustments required by CRT projection. In addition, LCD projection sets will not suffer from rainbow effects, a form of color interference that some people notice with DLP. On the other hand, LCD projection sets can show a screen-door effect, where the grid-like space between the pixels is noticeable. However, provided the PT-52LCX66 is properly configured for the ambient light conditions and correctly positioned in relation to your seat (approximately 6-1/2 feet to 13 feet away for the 52-inch screen), the screen-door effect will not likely be an issue.
All content is displayed at the PT-52LCX66's native resolution of 1,280X720 (progressive), and a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter works to eliminate interference. The three LCD panels create realistic colors, although black levels are not up to par with CRT projection and DLP. Thanks to the internal ATSC (high-definition) and QAM tuners, the PT-52LCX66 can potentially show unscrambled digital cable programming and over-the-air and cable HD content without an extra set-top box, although you should check with your cable provider to ensure QAM compatibility. Unfortunately, the PT-52LCX66 lacks a CableCARD slot, and it notably omits PIP functionality.
The PT-52LCX66's audio system is underpowered for a TV of this size, producing only 20 total watts of output from the pair of stereo speakers. Three audio presets are optimized for standard content, movies and dialogue, and sound options include simulated surround sound. Convenience features include an adjustable sleep timer, parental locks for particular channels or program ratings and viewing of JPEG photos from SD card in thumbnail, slide show or single-play mode.
The rear of the PT-52LCX66 has a respectable collection of input and outputs for connecting other home theater components, with two composite video inputs (plus one on the front panel), two S-video inputs (as well as one on the front), two component video inputs, an HDMI input, the PC input, an RF input, a composite video output and a coaxial digital audio output. Overall, the PT-52LCX66 is a solid if unspectacular big-screen HDTV choice that won't break the bank.
Pros: PC input, SD card slot, compact design
Cons: Weak audio system for a big TV, no CableCARD slot, no PIP
