Panasonic MC-V9634 Powerhead Canister
Date Published: 4/21/08
The Panasonic MC-V9634 Powerhead Canister proves that a quality vacuum cleaner can still be purchased for a reasonable price. It is the least expensive of Panasonic's powerhead canisters.
A solid machine, this entry-level model is built on the same chassis as Panasonic's more fully featured model, the MC-V9644. The difference is in the little details. This machine is not quite as easy to use and not quite as versatile as those that cost more than $250. The most obvious difference here is this model's lack of a bare floor switch. This switch is particularly useful if you have lots of tile, linoleum, or hard wood to vacuum. If your intent is to use this machine primarily on carpet, then the lack of the switch should not pose a problem.
The hose on this model, at 6 feet, is a foot shorter than on the step-up unit. A 6-foot hose like this one offers sufficient length for cleaning sofas and chairs, but it can be a bit limiting for cleaning a full flight of stairs. On stairs, a longer hose can extend your reach and keep the canister on solid ground for a far longer period of time. Other considerations are a shorter cord (20 feet) and a hose that swivels 270 degrees instead of a full 360.
The basic features of this model, however remain identical to the more expensive model. Four attachments are onboard in a covered storage compartment. A triple micron filter gathers fine particles and prevents them from redepositing into the air. Four carpet height selections ensure that ground in soil is released, regardless of pile depth. An extra wide 14-inch powerhead cleans lots of carpet quickly.
The overload protector shuts down the motor if a clog should occur, and a headlight makes it easy to see where you are vacuuming, even in a dimly lit room. A dual edge cleaner picks up dirt trails that can get left behind. Suction controls allow you to vary the suction in order to vacuum lightweight fabrics, such as curtains. Heavy-duty wands are durable and constructed of long lasting chrome.
For those looking for a durable, heavy-duty machine that's light on frills, the Panasonic MC-V9634 Powerhead Canister may be just the ticket.
Pros: same solid canister used by the more expensive models, chrome wands
