Panasonic DVD-S52K up-conversion DVD player

If you can't decide between the new high-definition video formats of HD DVD and Blu-ray, or if you don't want to make a large investment on a new technology, an up-conversion DVD player such as the Panasonic DVD-S52K is a good compromise. When connected to a compatible TV via HDMI, the black DVD-S52K (and its mechanical twin, the silver DVD-S52S) upgrades standard 480i or progressive scan 480p DVD content to high-definition 720p or 1,080i resolutions.
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) provides an uncompressed digital-to-digital connection that can carry standard, progressive scan and high-definition video, along with multichannel digital audio, all in a single cable. Unfortunately, like many HDMI-equipped DVD players, the DVD-S52K does not include an HDMI cable. A 6-foot HDMI cable can cost as much as this unit's MSRP of $100, so make sure you factor in the additional expense.
For an inexpensive player, the DVD-S52K offers plenty of playback, video and audio control options, and it is compatible with a wide range of disc formats. In addition to standard DVD-Video, this player can handle DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-RAM. Other compatible formats include CD-R/RW, including discs with MP3 or WMA audio files and JPEG image files. Advanced audio controls such as the multi re-master feature enhances CD audio, delivering a noticeably superior sound. When watching movies, Advanced Virtual Surround Sound simulates surround sound over stereo speakers. The DVD-S52K can also route Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel sound to a full-feature home theater receiver via its optical digital audio output.
All these features are packaged in a slim, neatly styled single-disc player. One significant design flaw lies in the loading tray, which makes it impossible to load and unload discs holding only the edges. That aside, the Panasonic DVD-S52S is a versatile, high-quality player with many features you would only expect to see on a much more expensive model.
Pros: HDMI connection, up-conversion to 720p and 1,080i, plenty of playback and picture control options
Cons: Poorly designed tray, no HDMI cable included
