The Panasonic DVD-LS90 portable DVD player certainly has a lot going for it, including excellent battery life, a huge LCD screen, and impressive disc compatibility. With an MSRP of around $400, it is also a very affordable device.

Unlike most traditionally designed portable players, the DVD-LS90 has a swivel-and-pivot screen that enables the bright 9-inch display to accommodate any number of viewing positions. The DVD-LS90 can even lay completely flat.

The slim construction and lightweight design means the DVD-LS90 is still extremely portable and can easily slip into a briefcase or carry-on luggage. The included rechargeable battery offers up to an exceptional 6 hours of playback on a single charge, depending on the level of brightness selected. Purchasing the optional higher capacity battery will push the DVD-LS90's life to 10 hours per charge. This is enough to provide continuous entertainment on everything but the longest international flight. As well as handling standard movie DVD, the DVD-LS90 is compatible with DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-Audio (two-channel playback only), audio CD, and CD-R/RW. Digital music fans will also be able to use the DVD-LS90 to listen to MP3 and WMA digital audio files burned to disc.

The unit can also double as a functional home DVD player. It offers Dolby Digital and DTS passthrough, so you can connect the unit to a home theater receiver and experience the full benefit of surround sound. The Panasonic DVD-LS90 includes a remote control and plenty of playback options.

Unfortunately, the DVD-LS90's plethora of features results in a slight sacrifice in picture quality. Despite its size and brightness, the level of sharpness and clarity produced by the DVD-LS90's screen does not quite match that of the more expensive Panasonic DVD players.

Nevertheless, for most users keen for distraction on a long flight or looking to entertain the kids on a road trip, the Panasonic DVD-LS90 will make an excellent choice.
