Panasonic DVD-LS55 portable DVD player

Date Published: 1/9/08

The Panasonic DVD-LS55 is both stylish and functional, and it stands out from the crowd with its superior quality screen and outstanding battery life. This solid, well-constructed unit is nevertheless lightweight and extremely portable, as well as attractive in its eye-catching black and silver. Despite its slim (1-5/32 inches) design, the DVD-LS55 sports a rechargeable battery that can provide up to an extraordinary 10 hours of continuous entertainment. That's enough to watch five or six full-length feature films or a season of a favorite sitcom on DVD, and it has the potential to provide enough entertainment for an entire transatlantic flight.

The DVD-LS55's 7-inch screen pivots to accommodate a broad range of viewing positions, and it delivers sparkling images with excellent color and contrast. The unit's Cinema Mode automatically adjusts contrast in dark scenes and helps to reduce screen glare from any ambient lighting. The quality of audio reproduction is also a cut above most other portable DVD players, especially when listening through headphones. The DVD-LS55 offers twin headphone jacks, so there's no need for a splitter to allow two people sitting next to each other to simultaneously enjoy a movie or music. The quality of sound is also better than average when utilizing the player's built in speakers, and Panasonic includes an FM transmitter. This enables audio from the player to be sent to a car stereo so all the passengers can enjoy the sound.

While it lacks progressive scan playback, the DVD-LS55 can still double as a functional home DVD player. When connected to a TV, the player's Advanced Surround Sound feature replicates surround sound through any twin-speaker setup. It also offers Dolby Digital and DTS passthrough, and the Dialogue Enhancer boosts the center-channel volume to improve dialogue clarity.

The DVD-LS55 offers excellent disc compatibility, including DVD-Video, DVD-RAM/R, and high-fidelity DVD-Audio (stereo playback only). Panasonic's HighMAT ensures digital media compatibility between the DVD player and a PC, which improves access, storage, and playback of recordable discs containing MP3 and WMA music files or JPEG images.
