Panasonic DMR-ES35VS VCR/DVD Recorder
Date Published: 1/3/07
Uniting a DVD recorder and VCR into one space-saving component, the Panasonic DMR-ES35VS is a great way to transfer content from VHS tape to DVD or vice versa. This unit is not without its problems, but overall the DMR-ES35VS is an effective combination player and recorder.
The DMR-ES35VS records to just about any disc format, including DVD-RAM. Using this type enables DVR-style time-slip functions, so you can watch the beginning of a recorded show while the unit continues to record the end. The DMR-ES35VS offers five different recording speeds as well as one-touch dubbing. In addition, in long-play (LP) mode, this unit records at a resolution of 500 horizontal lines, compared with the more common LP level of 250 lines. This lets you fit a whole lot more content onto a disc without sacrificing image quality.
Speaking of the images, the quality of recordings and playback is extremely good. The DMR-ES35VS offers progressive scan output and DVD-Audio compatibility, and it can even record to and play back dual-layer (DL) DVD-R and DVD+R. However, this DVD recorder loses points for the clumsily laid out universal remote control and a VCR with only two heads rather than the usual four. Still, the Panasonic DMR-ES35VS is a functional device that combines the convenience of both a DVD recorder and VCR.
Pros: DVD recorder and VCR in one, higher-resolution long-play recording mode, multiple recording formats
Cons: Only two-head VCR, poorly designed remote, limited editing features
