Panasonic DMR-EH75VS DVR With DVD Recorder and VCR
Date Published: 2/15/08
The Panasonic DMR-EH75VS is a multifunction machine that combines the features of a DVR, VCR, DVD recorder and DVD player into one space-saving device. The DMR-EH75VS sports an internal 80GB hard drive that can store up to 142 hours of TV programming in EP (extended play) mode, and less in higher-quality modes. Once recorded to the hard drive, you can edit out commercials and transfer the content to DVD or VHS for archiving or sharing with friends.
The DMR-EH75VS also includes an HDMI digital-to-digital output, and it can up-convert standard DVD movies (480i and 480p) to play at HD-equivalent resolutions (720p and 1,080i). It should be noted that up-conversion does not add any details not found on the original DVD; for true high-definition movies, you'll need an HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc player.
The quick-start feature has the DMR-EH75VS up and recording to either the hard drive or disc within 1 second, so you'll never miss the beginning of a favorite show or sporting event while waiting for the unit to power up. The DMR-EH75VS records to just about any recordable DVD format, and when using DVD-RAM, it enables DVR-like time-slip functions, such as the ability to watch the beginning of a recorded show while the unit continues to record to the end. There are five different recording speeds, as well as one-touch dubbing from the hard drive to disc or tape.
The included electronic program guide (EPG) provides listings of the next 8 days of TV programming, although it takes a while to get used to the EPG navigation system. While it isn't the most user-friendly system we've seen, keep in mind that it is a free service that requires no monthly subscription fee.
Even with its comprehensive array of recording options, the DMR-EH75VS does disappoint in some areas. The universal remote feels cheap and has a confusing, cluttered layout, causing us no little frustration while searching for the correct control. The integrated VCR makes the DMR-EH75VS more appealing, but the VCR's performance is average at best. Despite these minor gripes, the flexibility and overall recording quality is impressive. If you'd like to save space and money by combining all your recording options into one unit, take a good look at the Panasonic DMR-EH75VS.
Pros: All video-recording formats in one machine, flexible recording speeds, free EPG
Cons: Mediocre VCR performance, poorly designed remote, EPG not the easiest to navigate
