Palm Treo 700wx CDMA Smartphone

Date Published: 6/14/07

The Palm Treo 700wx is a feature-loaded device that includes the best bits of Treo smartphones and runs them using Windows Mobile software. One newer feature, however, is EV-DO high-speed network support. This means that you get DSL-comparable speeds for browsing the Internet and downloading e-mail. Operation of the Treo 700wx is also swift with the quick 312MHz Intel processor and 128MB of RAM (though a little over half of this memory is needed for the OS). Tasks, meanwhile, can be completely with a single hand due to the multidirectional toggle and well-designed QWERTY keyboard.

Although it has a bit of heft, the 700wx is stylish and comfortable to use as a phone. Features include speakerphone, vibrating ring, picture ID, and multiple polyphonic ringtones (including MP3 and video). Call quality is good and Palm's exceptional speakers and microphones offer good incoming and outgoing sound. The Li-ion battery gives reasonable performance at a little over two hours of talk time, and five days of standby.

Syncing is accomplished via USB, infrared, or Bluetooth. And on top of the unit is an expansion slot, which is great for storing additional music or video files. These files can then be played through the included Windows Media Player 10. Windows Mobile Office suite is also included, which contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and a PDF viewer. Unfortunately, to use Wi-Fi, you must purchase a Palm Wi-Fi card.

Being that most phones now double as multimedia devices, the specifications for cameras have become important. Unfortunately, the 700wx camera is only so-so. Pictures are 1.3 megapixels and the zoom is only 2x. You can, however, take videos that are stored in MPEG4 format.

One of the most unique features of the Treo 700wx is its Today screen. This allows you to access your most important information (appointments, to do list, calendar, clock, new messages, etc.) at a single glance of the phone. It also allows for quick activation of important applications. But the biggest drawback of this smartphone is the LCD's screen resolution. At 240x240 pixels, displayed information can often be difficult to read. Otherwise, this is a good device for the multi-tasker.

Pros: EV-DO compatibility, call quality, ease of use
Cons: screen resolution, mediocre camera
