Palm LifeDrive Mobile Manager PDA
Date Published: 8/26/08
Palm's LifeDrive Mobile Manager is one of the most robust PDAs out there. With its 4GB hard drive, wireless connectivity and Bluetooth support, it's at the current cutting edge of which mobile devices are capable. Unfortunately, it's at the upper limits of PDA pricing as well.
While most PDAs have a few hundred megabytes of storage space, the LifeDrive's 4GB hard drive provides ample room for storing documents, MP3, and even video files. In fact, the LifeDrive supports MP3 playlists, making it a decent competitor to an iPod. The LifeDrive also functions as a removable storage drive, letting files be moved on and off the PDA quickly and easily.
The LifeDrive supports Microsoft Office documents, so you can work on your work while you're away from work, so to speak. It also supports POP, IMAP and Microsoft Exchange to catch up on e-mails during the train ride to the office. The built-in voice recorder allows the LifeDrive to double as a dictation machine.
The large 3-7/8-inch diagonal LCD screen gives you a lot of room for viewing applications or showing off photos and video clips. Even with that screen and the monster hard drive, the LifeDrive weighs in at a reasonable 6.8 ounces. It won't go unnoticed in a pocket, but it will slip into a shoulder bag or purse without taking up much space.
There's a slot for SD/MMC and SDIO cards on the top of the LifeDrive, letting you view the photos you've just taken with your digital camera or transfer data to a PC with a media card reader. Built-in Bluetooth support means you can interact with a laptop or cell phone directly from the LifeDrive, and the built-in wireless gives you internet access in any wireless hot spot.
Palm includes a protective sleeve with the LifeDrive, although the rest of the bundle is rather spartan. The cost of this unit is a hefty price to pay for a PDA. However, if cost is no object and you're looking for a handheld with a huge amount of storage space and excellent multimedia capabilities, Palm's LifeDrive Mobile Manager will serve you well.
