Outlaw Audio LFM-2 subwoofer
Date Published: 3/27/06
The Outlaw Audio LFM-2 is a cost-effective subwoofer that will deliver competent bass at a moderate price. The LFM-2 is particularly attractive because of its small size, which greatly expands the placement options. Moreover, in spite of its small footprint, the LFM-2 provides a powerful bass response.
The LFM-2 employs an 8-inch woofer in a single-port, downward-firing configuration, powered by a 150-watt digital amplifier. The downward firing design places the floor as the nearest defined and fixed boundary, minimizing variable interactions that can be created when side-firing subwoofers are placed near a wall. Frequency response is 28Hz to 180Hz (+/-2dB).
The amplifier provides both line-level and speaker-level inputs, and there is a speaker-level output as well. Phase can be switched to 0 degrees or 180 degrees, and power sensing automatically turns the LFM-2 on and off. The fourth-order low-pass crossover uses a Linkwitz-Reilly network design for a steep cutoff slope and flat in-band response. The crossover frequency can be varied between 30Hz and 90Hz, or it can instead be bypassed in favor of an external upstream bass management system. The cabinet has a black satin finish, and there is a smoked Plexiglas insert on top.
The Outlaw Audio LFM-2 provides deep bass from a small cabinet, and it outputs a reasonably high sound pressure level. In all but the largest rooms, the LFM-2 will provide good bass reproduction for a mid-price home theater system.
