Onkyo TX-SR603X seven-channel XM A/V receiver
Date Published: 1/11/08
The Onkyo TX-SR603X is a different kind of home theater receiver. This powerful unit provides a substantial 90 watts to its seven channels, but it also includes a few unexpected twists. First and foremost, the TX-SR603X has an integrated XM Satellite Radio receiver. All you need is an antenna and an active XM subscription, and the TX-SR603X is set to deliver XM's commercial-free music and other content. In addition, with an optional adapter, the TX-SR603X becomes a robust interface for an iPod.
Even with these flashy features, the TX-SR603X doesn't forget about the basics. It has decoding for six- and seven-channel formats including DTS-ES and Dolby Digital EX. The rear panel includes two audio and four composite video inputs, along with four optical digital audio inputs and one optical output. There is also a 5.1 channel connection for the analog output from a DVD-Audio or SACD player. There are five S-video inputs and three outputs. For high-definition setups, the TX-SR603X has three component inputs and one component output.
The TX-SR603X has a long list of useful features, such as an on-screen display, 32 signal processing modes, adjustable crossovers and a midnight mode that keeps movie dialogue loud while reducing the music and sound effect levels. There is an automatic calibration function, and the TX-SR603X comes complete with a microphone to optimize the system for specific room acoustics and speaker characteristics. The receiver can also be configured to power speakers in another room with a separate source, so one room can enjoy a DVD movie while another room listens to the output of an iPod, a CD player or XM.
Add it all up, and Onkyo's TX-SR603X is a favorite in our book.
