The market for stereo receivers is shrinking fast, but a quality two-channel receiver is essential for a dedicated audio system. A good example is the affordable Onkyo TX-8222. This stereo receiver ignores flashy features while hitting a home run in terms of pure musical performance.

With the TX-8222, Onkyo focuses first and foremost on the power supply while including only the features it considers most important. This attention is readily apparent, as the TX-8222 produces a very clean signal. The amplifier delivers 50 watts (average) per channel into 8 ohms, and this receiver also has 6- and 4-ohm capability. To keep the amplifier running at peak efficiency, the TX-8222 has a heavy-duty extruded aluminum heat sink, and a reinforced chassis gives everything a stable base.

The TX-8222 has two sets of speaker outputs, so you can set up one pair of speakers in your main listening space and another in an adjoining room. There are six analog audio inputs, including a dedicated phono input for a turntable. We would have liked to see a coaxial or optical input to digitally connect a CD player, however.

A digital AM/FM tuner is present, and it offers direct-access tuning for quick station changes. Instead of digital signal processing and equalizers, the TX-8222 has simple rotary bass and treble controls. In a nod to current trends, the TX-8222 can be used with Onkyo's iPod dock (model DS-A2), and the included remote control will also operate your docked iPod.

For no-frills stereo performance that will make your music sound crisp and pure, the Onkyo TX-8222 is a basic but by no means pedestrian stereo receiver.
