The Onkyo DV-SP502 is a fine universal player, able to play virtually any disc format that you can load in it.

First and foremost, it is compatible with DVD-Audio and SACD, both of which provide high-resolution multichannel sound. It will also accommodate CD and CD-R/RW. The DV-SP502 can play MP3 and WMA CD made using variable bit rates, and it is compatible with most multisession discs. On the video side, it can handle DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, most DVD+R/RW and VCD, as well as discs with JPEG files up to a resolution of 3,072X2,048.

The DV-SP502 contains Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, and it will output 5.1-channel analog audio signals as well as digital signals via its optical and coaxial outputs. The 5.1-channel outputs can be adjusted for bass management. You can adjust timing differences between speakers, and multichannel Dolby Digital and DTS sources can be down-mixed to stereo playback. Audio digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion is handled with 24-bit resolution and up to a 192kHz sampling frequency.

Video quality is maintained with a 12-bit video D/A converter, operating at 108MHz. The DV-SP502 provides a progressive scan mode and component video output for playback on digital displays, and it also has standard S-video and composite video outputs for analog sets. This player comes in black, and it is also available in silver as model DV-SP502S.

If your movie and music collection encompasses a wide variety of disc and file types, the Onkyo DV-SP502 can probably play them all, and do so with excellent sound and picture quality.
