Onkyo CS-V720S universal stereo system
Date Published: 5/10/06
The Onkyo CS-V720S is an impressive minisystem that can play just about everything, including high-resolution music, DVD movie tracks, and even XM Satellite Radio. It has the elegant heft and style of a larger component system, and it is literally packed with features.
The main unit features a disc player that handles CD and CD-R/RW, including discs loaded with MP3 files. To go an audio step further, the CS-V720S is compatible with DVD-Audio and SACD, although it only provides a two-channel downmix. It also plays DVD-Video, and the CS-V720S downmixes Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks to stereo. Progressive scan signals are output to a TV via a component video output, and the CS-V720S also has S-video and composite video outputs.
The CS-V720S contains an XM Satellite Radio receiver, although you must provide the antenna and pay for the XM subscription to receive XM's music, sports, talk, weather, and traffic programming. A digital AM/FM tuner rounds out the source options.
Other perks include a subwoofer pre-amplifier output for connecting an optional powered subwoofer, a headphone jack, and a standard remote control. Each bass reflex speaker contains a 1/2-inch soft dome tweeter and 5-1/8-inch woofer. On the downside, the amplifier is rated at only 23 watts per channel.
With the possible caveat of relatively modest power output, the CS-V720S is a great audio/video playback unit that will look good in any upscale setting. You would be hard-pressed to find another compact and relatively inexpensive system that can do all the CS-V720S can.Warranty
