Olympus P-11 Photo Printer

Date Published: 2/26/08

The Olympus P-11 dye sublimation photo printer produces fine-quality photo prints in record time. However, this convenience will cost you, as the P-11's per-print costs are higher than inkjet and laser printers. The P-11 also lacks some features commonly found on other dye sublimation photo printers, including an LCD preview screen and the ability to print from a memory card. In addition, we found that color fidelity and overall image quality don't quite measure up to some of the competition.

As is often true of dye sublimation printers, the P-11 is limited to print sizes of 4X6 inches and 3-1/2X5 inches. You may never print photos larger than 4X6 inches, so this limitation isn-t necessarily a deal-breaker, and you can always visit a local or online photo lab for the occasional enlargement.

A PictBridge port on the front of the P-11 lets you connect to and print directly from PictBridge-compatible digital cameras. Because there are no memory card slots, your options are limited to printing from digital cameras and computers.

The paper input tray holds up to 50 sheets of photo paper and is contained within the printer, which helps the P-11 maintain its compact shape. The entire printing process takes place inside the printer, including a final protective coating, so there's no opportunity for dust or dirt to mar your prints. When prints exit the top of the printer, they are stored in a fold-down stacker.

The P-11 package doesn't include any photo editing software, so if you want to make any enhancements to your photos, you will either need to do that on your digital camera (if that option is available) or transfer the photos to your computer for editing.

The Olympus P-11 dye sublimation photo printer is high on per-print costs and short on features, but it's a good choice if output speed is more important than features or top-notch print quality.

Pros:  Easy to use, fast print speeds with good output quality, compact with internal paper tray, can print directly from PictBridge-compatible digital cameras
Cons:  High per-print costs, package doesn't include any photo editing software, can't print larger than 4X6 inches, can't print from memory cards, no LCD preview screen, no option to add battery or wireless functionality
