NTI (NewTech Infosystems) Shadow 3
Date Published: 5/11/06
NTI Shadow 3 virtually eliminates any worries about data loss by performing continuous, real-time backups.
Most backup software programs allow you to perform automatic backups of your data on the schedule of your choice, such as every day at 5 p.m. (Most also allow you to perform a manual backup at any time.) This scheduling capability frees you from worrying about remembering to manually back up your files at the end of the day, but it also leaves you vulnerable to losing files, if you happen to have a system or hard drive crash in between backups.
With NTI Shadow, you select a folder or directory, and NTI Shadow will back up the contents of the folder and any files or folders it contains, including backing up individual files whenever there is a change to a file. If you're working on an important presentation or report, and your system takes a dive, you shouldn't lose more than a few minutes' work.
Setting up a backup is easy, because NTI Shadow's interface is simple and easy to navigate. Each backup is called a job. A job may contain as many or as few folders and files as you like, and may also have its own individual settings. By default, a job's name is your system log-in name, plus the current year, date, and time, although you can also rename it to something more meaningful, such as work in progress. Configuring a job is a four-step process (What, Where and When, How, and Summary) that is intuitive and easy to follow.
If you need to recover a file, the process is just as simple. Unlike many backup programs, NTI Shadow stores files in their native format rather than a proprietary format, so you don't have to go through a time-consuming restore process. Simply copy the target file back to your hard drive.
Pro: Inexpensive. Simple, straightforward interface. Offers a number of customization options. Data is stored in its native format, so restoring a file is a simple matter of copying it back to your hard drive. Real-time backup has little effect on system performance.
Con: There's no option to automatically launch NTI Shadow at startup, so you must remember to launch the program whenever you boot or reboot.
