NordicTrack AudioStrider 990
Date Published: 2/4/08
The NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 is an inexpensive elliptical machine with a feature set that puts most high-end units to shame. Unfortunately, we find that the performance of this machine doesn't quite match its excellent specs.
The SpaceSaver design of the AudioStrider 990 means that you can fold the elliptical machine away when not in use. The motorized power ramp lets you vary the incline settings to target different muscle groups, and the one-touch resistance control lets you instantly select one of 15 different intensity levels. The AudioStrider 990 also boasts an impressive 24 workouts, including two heart rate-controlled programs. If that isn't enough, this elliptical is also compatible with iFit interactive workout cards, so you can select exercise routines that are tailored by a personal trainer in order to keep your workouts varied and challenging. With so many options available, there is little chance that any exercise schedule based on the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 will ever become boring or repetitive.
We prefer the structure of the 990 to that of the lower end NordicTrack SpaceSaver elliptical. The 990 offers a higher maximum user weight of 325 pounds and feels more solid as you work out. Unfortunately, though, like the SpaceSaver model, this elliptical is not a quiet machine; we find that it emits a lot of noise during workouts. The compact design may appeal to those with limited space in an apartment or condo, but the racket won't appeal to your family members or neighbors. That aside, we find that the AudioStrider 990 delivers an effective workout. The music port lets you plug in an iPod or other MP3 player so your favorite tunes are piped through a speaker system that is built into the console. Sensors that are integrated into the handlebars let you monitor your heart rate for optimal fat burning or cardiovascular results.
As with other NordicTrack models, the 990 carries only a meager 1-year warranty for both parts and labor, although there are extended warranties available. It offers an excellent feature set for a relatively affordable elliptical machine, but its noisy operation and short warranty don't match the great promise of this unit.
Pros: Excellent feature set, 24 program workouts, compatible with iFit workout cards, music port and speaker system, motorized power ramp, relatively inexpensive
Cons: Noisy operation, poor warranty
