NordicTrack 740 MTN
Date Published: 11/9/07
The NordicTrack 740 MTN stair stepper appears to have a flimsy frame. As such, our thoughts turn immediately to the machine's service protection; it carries a one-year standard warranty for both parts and labor, but NordicTrack also offers an extended three-year in-home warranty plan for an additional $129.99. While this adds a substantial amount to the overall cost of the 740 MTN, it is worth protecting your investment and making sure that you manage at least three years of regular exercise from this stair stepper.
Once we get on the 740 MTN, we find that it performs well, delivering an effective cardio workout. The ergonomic design allows for comfortable exercising, whether you're out of shape or a serious athlete. NordicTrack's silent magnetic resistance provides smooth adjustments without requiring you to step off the machine or otherwise interrupt your workout.
The sensors built into the handrails monitor your heart rate, and while the 740 MTN offers four built-in workout programs, it is also iFit compatible. iFit technology enables you to connect the stair stepper to a DVD player, VCR or PC and select one of a hundred different workouts from iFit.com; the 740 MTN will then automatically adjust resistance according to the routine selected. This is a great way to keep your exercise routines varied and challenging.
The computer console is conveniently located at eye level and offers feedback on workout statistics including time, speed, calories burned, vertical feet climbed and pulse. The onboard CoolAire workout fan helps to keep you cool as you work out.
Overall, we are impressed with the performance of the NordicTrack 740 MTN, but the short warranty and less-than-sturdy build make us question the long-term reliability of this stair stepper.
Pros: Smooth resistance adjustment, iFit compatible for plenty of workout variation
Cons: Flimsy build, short warranty
Warranty
1 year, parts and labor
