Nikon SB800 AF Speedlite camera flash

Date Published: 6/20/06

The Nikon SB800 AF Speedlite is compatible with almost all Nikon digital and film SLR cameras when i-TTL auto flash control is set to match the camera body. It offers TTL and non-TTL auto flash (A) with many less-sophisticated Nikon film cameras. It's also capable of advanced wireless system lighting for use with multiple flash units, all cordless and totally automatic.

There are four frequency channels so it can be adjusted so other SB-800 units will not accidentally trigger this speedlite. In High Speed Synch mode it can be synchronized with fast camera speeds up to 1/8000 second. A modeling light lets the user preview lighting to visually check the lighting effects. A large illuminated LCD on the back displays easy-to-read graphics for simplified use. Larger, well-labeled pushbuttons make adjusting the settings simple.

The zoom head covers ultra-wide 24mm normally, but there is a pull out and down diffusion screen, which further spreads the light to cover the field of an extra-wide 14 or 17mm lens. A small built-in white bounce card is also hidden in the flash head. A quick-recycling battery pack for a fifth battery, color filter set, stand, and carrying case are included.

We were impressed with the excellent results when using the Nikon SB800 AF Speedlite  flash on Nikon F6 and F100 SLR cameras. It easily and evenly covered the entire field of the ultra-wide 24mm lens. When used either direct or for ceiling bounce, the exposures were critically on the target. In addition, it provided the proper amount of fill light when used outdoors in daylight.
