Nikon F6 AF SLR camera

Date Published: 7/22/08

The Nikon F6 AF SLR is the flagship model Nikon professional camera that compares favorably with any SLR film camera available today. It offers a multitude of optional modes and special features to satisfy the varied needs of any skill level photographer.

It is a bit bulkier and heavier in order to include all the features, and carries a hefty price because of these extras. One of the notable features is the very fast 1/8000 second top shutter speed. Also included are eleven area high-speed autofocusing sensors that cover the greater part of the viewing area with the option of setting any of four AF modes. Dynamic AF is not only precise, but it shifts rapidly to alter the focus area when the subject is moving. Unusually fast autofocusing and extra quiet shutter make this model fast and accurate under any shooting situations.

This unit also has advanced 3-D color matrix metering with the option of flexible center-weighted or spot metering. Operating controls are logically positioned around the body for ease of operation and access. An operational LCD on the top is augmented with a larger informational LCD on the back that displays much of the optional information not needed as often.

An aluminum alloy die-cast chassis provides strength and rigidity to the Nikon F6. Strategically placed rubber surfaces provide easy-to-grip textures, making this camera exceptionally comfortable to hold and use. Like competitive pro SLR cameras, there is no built-in flash. There is a hot shoe and PC sync contact for studio flashes, however, and it has the capability of advanced i-TTL system flash control when used with shoe mount flashes having this capability. Exposure bracketing, AE exposure bracketing, four film advance modes, data back functions, and custom settings are just a few of the built-in capabilities.

The test pictures we took were all exceptionally sharply detailed with precise focus at a variety of different focal lengths and subject distances using a 24-120mm zoom lens. Exposures under low light levels indoors and bright outdoor light were all proper. A host of accessories available include battery pack and a vertical grip.

The Nikon F6 AF SLR camera is an excellent feature-laden SLR, but the high price will make some consumers look twice.
