Nikon F100 AF SLR camera

Date Published: 6/20/06

The Nikon F100 AF SLR camera is a true professional SLR with a multitude of features and capabilities that should satisfy all the various needs of any type of photographer.

It has a tight functional feel with protrusions and depressions on the right and left sides, which offer secure gripping areas. All of the various control buttons and dials are conveniently located for easy access and have large, very visible markings as to their specific functions. Nevertheless, it takes a good read of the instructions to fully utilize all the extra modes and capabilities built into this camera.

The TTL phase detection autofocusing can be adjusted to use one of five focus areas that light up red in the viewfinder to indicate which rectangle is being used. Autofocusing is exceptionally smooth and quiet. The viewfinder is very bright. A full information LCD panel located just below the viewfinder field gives concise data on exactly how the camera is operating. This same data is also displayed on the large LCD on top of the body. TTL full-aperture, internal exposure metering system is augmented by optional center-weighted and spot metering capability.

Optional exposure modes are set by first pressing down on a mode button then turning either a main command dial on the back or sub-command dial on the front. Twenty-two different customized settings (different from the initial factory settings) can quickly be set by referring to the instructions then pressing two buttons. Exposure compensation, auto exposure, and auto flash bracketing can be easily set. There is no built-in flash, but it has both a hot shoe and PC contact for use with studio flash units.

Test exposures using the Nikon F100 AF SLR camera under a diverse range of light levels were all properly exposed. The autofocusing was very accurate from close up to distant subjects with a variety of focal lengths using a 24-120mm zoom lens. Images all had excellent sharp detail.
