Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm 4.3X Zoom Lens
Date Published: 5/10/05
The telephoto zoom range of the AF Nikkor 70-300mm 4.3X Zoom Lens encompasses the typical moderate to longer telephoto focal lengths most often used for general photography. An easy-to-grip, very broad-knurled ring is used to zoom the lens by turning it right or left through about 90 degrees. This movement is smooth and quiet. The close focusing distance of 5 feet is quite respectable, especially at the 300mm focal length when it covers a small area measuring just 3-1/4x5-1/2 inches--about the size of a postcard. The autofocusing is precise and moderately fast, but a bit noisy. It does focus accurately on a variety of textures and types of subjects and subject distances. The lens is quite lightweight for a long telephoto thus is relatively easy to handhold and keep steady. The overall length of the lens moves out about 2 inches at the maximum telephoto position. Test prints made with this lens on both Nikon N55 and N80 AF SLR bodies all had quite sharp detail at a variety of different focal lengths and subject distances. The focusing seemed to be precise and accurate and color renditions were excellent.
