NexConcepts PC NoteTaker
Date Published: 6/9/06
The PC NoteTaker solves two common problems in one easy-to-use package. It allows you to take notes or create sketches by hand, rather than by mouse or keyboard. Plus, it eliminates the worry of losing scraps of handwritten paper notes, although it can't reduce the possibility of losing or overwriting computer files.
The PC NoteTaker offers a distinct advantage over many other portable note-taking solutions: it doesn't require special paper. Connect the unit's USB cable to a PC, attach the clip to a letter-size pad or sheet of paper, grab the digital pen, and you're ready to start capturing notes and sketches. The NoteTaker will record and save every pen stroke.
You can use the NoteTaker software to edit your notes, including changing the ink width, ink color, or paper color, and you can share notes directly with colleagues who also have the software installed. You can print notes or export them in JPEG format and send them to colleagues via e-mail or an instant messaging program, just like any other file attachment.
PC installation is simple. The installer adds a PC NoteTaker icon to the system tray, so it's easy to access at any time. The NoteTaker is compatible with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, so you can use it to add handwritten notes to documents in any of these applications.
The package includes two software applications, Pen2Text and Sketcher. If you have Microsoft Office, you can use Pen2Text to convert notes to text in Microsoft Word. Contrary to what its name suggests, Sketcher isn't actually a drawing application. Instead, it allows the pen to simulate mouse movements and mouse clicks, so you can use it in some drawing and painting applications.
The NexConcepts PC NoteTaker pen uses three SR41 batteries, which are relatively inexpensive and readily available in many stores, including office supply stores. According to the manufacturer, the batteries should last between 4 and 6 months. Replacement/spare pens are $29.95.
Pro: Easy to use. Doesn't require special paper. Compatible with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Con: Requires a desktop, laptop, or tablet PC. Can only convert notes to text if you have the Microsoft handwriting engine (part of Microsoft Office) installed.
