NEC MultiSync 90GX2 19-inch LCD monitor
Date Published: 8/10/06
The 19-inch NEC MultiSync 90GX2 has one notable feature that you will either love or hate: a very glossy screen. NEC's OptiClear DVM technology produces a glossy surface that helps colors look their best, but it can be hard on the eyes, particularly in an office setting.
The 90GX2 is lightweight (less than 15 pounds) and easy to set up. The NoTouch Auto Adjust feature automatically adjusts the display to its optimal settings when you first set it up, and you can engage this function at any time you choose. The 90GX2 has four USB 2.0 ports, so it can serve as a USB hub for connecting other peripherals like webcams, keyboards and other components.
The base tilts 5 degrees forward and 30 degrees back, and it swivels 340 degrees. There are no pivot or height adjustment options, but the 90GX2 is VESA-compatible if you want to add an arm or wall mount.
Images are clean and sharp, with good brightness, contrast and color fidelity. Text quality is very good to excellent, even at small font sizes. The 4-millisecond pixel response time is fast enough to eliminate most ghosting in fast-moving images, such as video and 3-D games.
You can adjust the display using the on-screen controls or by downloading and installing the free NaviSet software, available from the NEC website. NaviSet allows you to use your keyboard and mouse to adjust the monitor, which simplifies much of the process. You can also use the OSM (on-screen menu) to make adjustments. Accessible through a row of buttons on the bottom-front bezel, the OSM is well organized and easy to navigate. There are five viewing modes (Standard, Text, Movie, Photo and Gaming), but the modes aren't as finely tuned or useful as they could be.
The 90GX2 supports sGRB (standardized Red Green Blue), a color space defined by Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. The sRGB setting, available through the OSM and the NaviSet software, helps provide consistent color across software applications and hardware peripherals, including printers, scanners and digital cameras.
The NEC MultiSync 90GX2 doesn't have any outstanding features to recommend it, but it is a good all-purpose display, as long as you don't mind the glossy screen or limited adjustment options.
Pros: Good image quality, excellent text quality, analog and digital inputs
Cons: No pivot or height adjustment options, glossy screen can be hard on the eyes, package doesn't include the NaviSet software
