NEC MultiSync 70GX2 17-Inch LCD Monitor
Date Published: 3/31/08
The NEC MultiSync 70GX2 is a stylish 17-inch LCD display that delivers very good to excellent image quality and some handy features. It also comes at a very competitive price.
The 70GX2 supports analog and digital inputs, and both types of cables are included. The NoTouch Auto Adjust feature automatically configures the display to its optimal settings when you first turn it on, and it allows you to easily return the display to the factory settings at any time. Four USB ports are available on the display, so you can use it as a hub for connecting digital cameras, scanners, webcams and other peripherals.
The 70GX2 has a native resolution of 1,280X1,024, and image quality is generally excellent. NEC's OptiClear DVM technology produces a glossy surface that helps colors look their best and details stand out sharply, but it can also be hard on the eyes, particularly in an office setting. Glare from background lights can be both distracting and, after extended viewing, painful.
The base is sturdy and takes up a minimum amount of desktop space. The display tilts 5 degrees forward and up to 30 degrees back, and it swivels 340 degrees. There are no pivot or height adjustment options, but the 70GX2 is VESA-compatible if you want to add an arm or wall mount.
You can adjust display settings using the on-screen controls or by downloading and installing the free NaviSet software, available from the NEC website. NaviSet allows you to use your keyboard and mouse to adjust the monitor, which simplifies much of the process. You can also use the OSM (on-screen menu) to make adjustments. There are five viewing modes (Standard, Text, Movie, Photo and Gaming), and while we don't think any of them are quite right, a little manual tweaking makes a big improvement.
The 70GX2 supports sGRB (standardized Red Green Blue), a color space defined by Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. Available through the OSM and the NaviSet software, the sGRB setting helps provide consistent color across software applications and hardware peripherals, including printers, scanners and digital cameras.
The NEC MultiSync 70GX2 offers excellent image quality and a satisfying collection of features at a very attractive price.
