Navman PiN 570 PDA with GPS

Date Published: 4/4/08

PDAs incorporating GPS (global positioning system) capabilities have been growing in popularity, and traditional GPS device makers have jumped on the bandwagon by adding PDA functions to their navigation systems. One good example is Navman's PiN 570, which is a capable PDA but is first and foremost a satellite-based GPS receiver.

The SmartST software built into the PiN 570 lets you view maps in 2-D or 3-D, and it incorporates a long list of other trip-planning features. The PiN 570 provides turn-by-turn voice guidance, although it lacks text-to-speech (TTS) technology that announces actual street names. You can plan a journey with up to 12 stops, and with the included SmartST CD map set, you can import several million points of interest that automatically display on your maps.

But the PiN 570 is also a capable PDA. Built around a 266MHz Samsung processor with 64MB of internal memory, it's able to handle Pocket PC applications with ease. Mobile versions of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Outlook ship with the PiN 570, letting you take files and contact information on the road. The 3-1/2-inch color LCD touchscreen is bright and can display 65,000 colors.

The PiN 570 has a SD slot for expanding the memory of the PDA, giving you more room to store maps and files. Unfortunately, there is no built-in Wi-Fi and no means for adding it on, so you won't be able to browse the internet. On the plus side, the PiN 570 does include an MP3 player, so you can take some of your tunes with you.

Navman packages the PiN 570 with a number of useful accessories, although they mostly focus on the PDA's GPS abilities. The SmartST set contains detailed maps of North America, including Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Guam. There are also useful accessories for your vehicle, including a 12-volt car charger and a suction-mount arm. Also included is a carrying case and a docking cradle for synching with your PC.

Thanks to a recent price drop, Navman lists the PiN 570 at $300, making it a good buy for a GPS system mated to a Pocket PC PDA.

Pros: Useful GPS features, good PDA performance, MP3 player
Cons: No Wi-Fi, no TTS voice guidance

1 year, limited
