But by the time experimentalists Wooden Shjips came upon the Bay Area's shores, their version of trance-rock had been filtered through decades of outsider art, noisemaking groundbreakers, and a new breed of sociopolitical apathy that all come teeming through the artful dissonance of VOL. 1. Echo-effected vocals play unwilling narrator to the bizarre m?lange of garage, Kraut rock, chaotic feedback, and occasional tongue-in-cheek tugs of war with something approximating accessibility.
